河南洛阳是唐三彩的最早发现地。1905—1909年，清政府修筑陇海铁路汴洛段时，在洛阳北邙山毁损了一批唐代墓葬，从这些的墓葬中发现了大量的唐三彩陶器。但由于古代文献中对唐三彩记载甚少，其价值最初并未被世人所识。直至这批三彩陶器流入到北京琉璃厂古董街后，引起了王国维、罗振玉等学者和一些古董商、外国人的重视。
